Introducing Nike 1 Reimagined Collection: 10 New Sneaker Designs For Women

In An Effort To Encourage Inclusion Of Women And Give A Boost To The Increasingly Growing Fashion Trend Of Embracing Men-Like Sneakers Among Women, Nike Introduces 10 New Sneaker Designs For Women In White In Its All New Nike 1 Reimgined Collection

With the growing inclination of the millenial women towards easy-going rather than inconvenient fashion, streetwear in place of urbanwear, the sneaker stalwarts have been increasingly introducing men-like kicks to meet their demand and pacify their hunger for streetwear fashion.

Besides the sneaker giants, even luxury fashion houses like Chanel have took to introducing masculine inspired sneakers for women for Spring 2018 season, showcasing high-tops and low-tops interpreted in white combined with vivid summer shades of red, orange, pink and blue.

While Gender-Neutral fashion clothing is been sought-after by fashion loving women for quite sometime now, the most recent dimension in the fashion league to incorporate gender fluidness and to leave a marked impression on fashion divas is the masculine inspired sneakers for women. And the underlying reasons for driving such a fashion trend have been acknowledging comfort over inconvenience and inclusion of women.

Keeping both comfort and inclusion of women in the backdrop, Nike beseeched 14 of its internal women specialists hailing from varied departments such as mainline footwear, materials and color to design five new articulations each of two its iconic silhouettes, Air Jordan 1 and Air Force 1.

This is the first instance when these colorists, material specialists and mainline footwear designers have collaborated to rethink Nike Air Force 1 and Air Jordan 1 sneakers in 10 different designs. It was in 1982 that the American footwear brand introduced Air Force 1 – the first basketball shoe to integrate Nike Air technology – that was named after U.S. President’s aircraft. The Air Force 1 revolutionized the basketball game, given a pocket filled with air in the heel for cushioning and support.

Another icon, the Air Jordan 1, followed in the year 1985 for the professional basketball player Michael Jordan and soon evolved from original basketball shoes to becoming most coveted sneakers by the fashion enthusiasts.

Although the two iconic sneakers have been reinterpreted with regards to changing design patterns, canvases and colors, such reinterpretations have never departed away from the classic silhouette that defines both the classic kicks. However, the 1 Reimagined sneaker collection puts forth 5 new articulations each of the two icons that go against the classic silhouette and present a creative mix showcasing the varied personas of a woman.

With the objective of presenting a creative collection of sneakers, Footwear Director Andy Caine selected 14 participants saying, “The genesis of creativity is diversity. From a design point of view, each of the designers has a very unique background and personality. Our theory is that when you mix diverse creative talents you realize some magic.”

These fourteen participants headed by Georgina James, Senior Footwear Creative Director, started by pulling and grouping imagery, intent on defining the dimensions that make a woman. They held discussions with regards to both athletic mindset and fashion trends in isolation and tried to put together bits of information in place.

Moreover, the group also examined the elements of each of the iconic sneakers initially designed by men for male athletes, which have ultimately lured the female audience and how these sneakers can be further enhanced.

Finally, the group came up with five different archetypes namely explorer, lover, sage, rebel and jester based on five different personas of a woman. Though the explorer enhances the classic silhouette of both the icons in a subtle way, the Lover translates the iconic Air Force 1 into a velvet-lined mule and Air Jordan 1 into a feminine sandal with angled collars hugging the foot.

While the Air Force 1 Sage translates low-top classic into a slip-on style with a stack height of 12mm – the tallest stack height ever achieved for an Air Force 1 – the Air Jordan 1 Sage is a refined version incorporating clean, smoothly turned and stitched seams.

The Rebel archetype stands by its name and interprets the two icons in quite an intriguing way. The Air Force 1 Rebel takes all the components at the back of the shoe, where a corset lacing system at the heels highlights the inverted aesthetic. The Air Jordan 1 Rebel, on the other hand, incorporates a medial zipper that offers point of entry to the shoe. This in turn twists the shoe upper sideways.

Finally, the Jester playfully re-imagines the signature silhouettes by giving misplaced swoosh logos and a double-stacked rand to the Air Force 1 and zippers along with exaggerated ripple to the outsole.

The entire team flew to London to give these women centric sneakers, based on different personas, a practical shape. Initially, the group considered enhancing the materials and experimenting with the colors rather than going against the silhouette of the icons, but eventually the team soon realized that the silhouette had to be the headliner. Color and materials just had to be complementary and hence should just render the much needed bold look.

The Nike 1 Reimagined collection incorporates three enhancements that have been observed for the very first time for the iconic sneakers. These include the accomplishment of a stack height of 12mm which is the tallest stack height ever achieved for an Air Force 1, the first Air Force 1 Mule in the Air Force 1 Lover and the progressive back-to-front construction, complete with corset lacing, on the Air Force 1 Rebel.
